The Island Sailing Club was delighted to welcome Mr R.D.Bagnall for a memorable visit, recounting his victory in the 1977 Round the Island Race aboard his yacht Jubilee. Club staff and officers gathered with great enthusiasm to hear first hand accounts from a sailor whose achievement has become part of local maritime folklore. His presence brought a sense of history to the club, and there was an appreciation for the legacy of wining the Gold Roman Bowl
Mr Bagnall entertained us with vivid stories of the event, recalling both the intensity of the competition and the camaraderie among sailors. He spoke fondly of the conditions on the day and the tactical decisions that led to his success. With a smile, he also addressed the long-standing rumours that his victory had been “a fix,” given the coincidence of winning during the Queen’s Jubilee year in 1977. While clearly amused by the speculation, he assured listeners that the triumph of Jubilee was hard-earned and entirely genuine, adding a light-hearted charm to his visit.
The occasion was not without its own comedic twist. In an unfortunate mix-up, Mr Bagnall’s twin brother had used his dinner ticket, meaning that when Mr Bagnall arrived, his seat had already been taken. Mistaken for an uninvited guest, he was rather firmly escorted off the premises by the ISC security. The confusion was eventually resolved when his brother sheepishly confessed, prompting much laughter among those present. With the matter settled, Mr Bagnall was warmly welcomed back inside, and the evening continued in high spirits, becoming a story in its own right that was enjoyed by all.
